– Police officer’s wife confesses to
committing crime, explains herself
A police officer’s wife identified as Caroline
Akanwa, has been arrested for reportedly
battering her 10-year-old niece, Chioma
Uneneme.
The Punch reports that the 38-year-old
trader was nabbed by officers of the Area C
police command in Lagos state over the
atrocious act committed on her niece whom
she brought to their house in Iponri police
barracks from Okofia, Anambra state in
2015.

It was also gathered that the young girl was
saddled with the responsibility of assisting
with house chores and the management of
Akanwa’s recharge cards business and was
beaten for every offence till her back was
marred with sores.
The badly battered body of the 10-year-old
Chioma after the discovery by her teacher.

It was when Uneneme’s teacher at St. Paul
Primary School, Iponri, discovered the scars
that she took the girl to a hospital where
they were asked to present a police
statement before going ahead with the
treatment.
The school in turn, wrote the Lagos state
Office of the Public Defender (OPD) on the
matter and the officials of the latter
alongside a policewomen from the Area C
command went to effect the arrest of the
offender.
While confessing her crime to the OPD, the
suspect said: “Chioma (Uneneme) is my
niece. I brought her to Lagos last year and
she has been staying with me. I never
intended to inflict injuries on her.
“Some time ago, a customer came to buy a
N1,000 recharge card. She sold it for N970
after the person said he did not have the
balance. I spanked her for it.

“The latest happened on June 7. My husband
and I were not in the house. Somebody came
and said my husband’s car was blocking his
and he could not move out.
“She gave the person my husband’s car key
and the man bashed my husband’s car while
trying to move it. When I returned and saw
what had happened, I beat her. Aside these,
she steals from me. I beat her like I beat my
children.”
Speaking with The Punch, Omotola Rotimi,
director of the OPD informed that the
management of the young chap’s school
reported the case.
Rotimi, who was represented by his PRO,
Adeoba Adeniji-Adele, said that it was the
girl’s class teacher who made the discovery
and quickly alerted them.
According to him: “But the hospital
management asked for a police extract. The
school then decided to write a petition to us.
We immediately waded in and reported at the
Area C Police Command. Some of our officials
and the police went to the barracks to get her
arrested.
“The initial scars she got from the beating had
not healed, yet she decided to inflict more
injuries on her. She used her hand, cane, stick
and other objects to beat her. People must
learn to control their anger.
“We have taken custody of the child and she
is now in one of our transit homes.
“The suspect has two children, including a
baby of about six months.”
Akanwa has since been arraigned in a family
court in Surulere where she pleaded ‘not
guilty’ to the one count charge of assault
leveled against her by the police.
While granting her a N100,000 bail with two
sureties in like sum, a source quoted the
magistrate to have said: “one of the sureties
must be a blood relation and the second, a
civil servant of level 12 and above. One must
also have a landed property in Lagos and the
property should be verified by the Lagos State
Government.
“The sum of N50,000 is to be paid to the
account of the Auditor General of Lagos State.
She was remanded in prison custody pending
when she would meet the bail conditions.”
In a rather shocking report, a 25-year old
unemployed lady, Bilikisu Abodunrin, was
said to have beaten up her mother in Mushin
area of Lagos.
Bilkisu was said to have assaulted her
mother, one Mrs Adenike Adeniran, throwing
punches at her. An eyewitness said.
“Bilkisu threw some punches at her mother’s
body and caused her bodily harm. She on this
occasion beat-up the woman because she
stopped her from fighting with a neighbour.
Bilikisu , a nursing mother, also threatened to
poison the food of her mother and kill
her,” she said.
