Ogoni land: Presidency reacts over Buhari's trip

– The presidency said the vice president
was delegated to
represent President Muhammadu Buhari for
the Ogoni land clean-up exercise
– The presidency said it has nothing to do
with the threat issued by the Niger Delta
militants
President Muhammadu Buhari
The presidency has reacted to report that
President Muhammdu Buhari will not be
present at the flag off of Ogoni land clean-
up ceremony slated to take place in Rivers
state today.
Speaking to NAIJ.com on the development,
the special adviser on media and publicity to
the president, Femi Adesina said the vice
president, Yemi osinbajo will represent the
president on the flag off event.
Adesina said: “If the president is supposed to
go somewhere and he delegates the vice
president to represent him, does it mean
cancelled?”
On Monday, May 30, a statement by the
head of corporate affairs unit of the Niger
Delta Development Commission (NDDC),
Chijioke Amu-Nnadi, said that President
Muhammadu Buahri will be present at the
Ogoni land spill clean-up.
Amu-Nnadi in his statement said the
presidential visit to the area was confirmed
to him by the minister of environment,
Amina Mohammed.
“I can confirm that President Buhari will visit
Ogoni land on June 2 to flag-off clean-up of
oil spills in the area as recommended in the
United Nations Environment Programme
(UNEP) report,” Amu-Nnadi had said.

But since the announcement by the NDDC,
the Niger Delta Avengers militants ravaging
the region have issued stern warning over
the presidential visit.
The group threatened to kill the president if
he set foot within the region.
However, Adesina said the delegation of the
presidential visit has nothing to do with the
threats.
“Well the position is this, the president is
being represented by the vice president at the
flag off of Ogoni clean-up and it has nothing
to do with anything,” Adesina said.
“The presidency is one presidency and the
president can equally delegate duties to the
vice president,” he added.
Last week, the president had also cancelled
his trip to Lagos state for the commissioning
of some projects in the state.
Although no reason was given for the
cancellation by the presidency, President
Buhari was later seen receiving the governor
of ogun state, Ibikunle Amosun at the
presidential villa in Abuja.
